Wings and Penny: a strange yet natural shift
"Bye!" Penny called gaily to the Chihuahua pair, as Wings wagged his tail in farewell.
He turned his head to gaze briefly at Penny's sleek, fine head with its dark expressive eyes, and ears that lay flat in the showring and stood up every which way when she was anywhere else. His tail swept back and forth one more time, thoughtfully, as he considered her. It was so good that they weren't like Geraldo and Isa, fighting like tomcats and having to make up later. True, the two of them had had their moments, especially at first, but they'd never really fallen out in that manner. Why, getting to know her as he had done over the time she had lived with him, he considered her a valuable friend and packmate, his best friend in many ways. There was Beth, of course, but then Beth wasn't a dog...
Penny would make such a fantastic mother.
Canis, what was he thinking? Was it something about the way she looked recently... or smelt, for that matter? Wings snorted softly, shifting his paws on the grass in some embarassed confusion.
Penny, equally oblivious to her own pheromones, turned and cocked her head at him.
"What're you looking so uncomfortable for?" she inquired playfully, and then nipped at his ear again. "Let's go run some more!"
She dashed off, but Beth caught her up. "It's time we went home, young lady," she told her firmly, clipping her leash on and stalking towards the car with the whippet bitch still in her arms. Penny wriggled, half-protesting, but really giggling like the adolescent female she was, her tongue lolling from her jaws. She nuzzled at her owner's chin, whining ingratiatingly.
"Oh come on come on, just a bit longer? Please?"
Beth ignored her. "Here, boy," she called over her shoulder, knowing that Wings would follow them. He wouldn't leave Penny, not now. She had noticed the way the pair had been behaving recently, and she knew what was up.
It was time for their private hell to begin.
